Vis Tennis Finishes 1st in Conference
With November coming to a close, the fall season has officially wrapped up for all Vis sports. The 2018 season proved successful for many Vis athletes, whether it was on the tennis court, the soccer field, or in the pool; many even made it to State.
Starting on the volleyball courts, the Lady Blazers placed sixth in the Tri-Metro Conference. Overall, Vis Volleyball achieved an 8-19-0 record. Their season ended in late October with a loss to St. Croix Preparatory Academy.
Moving onto the tennis courts, Vis tennis ended with a great season and a doubles team at sections. Vis tennis finished first in conference with a 10-9-0 record. Doubles partners, senior Macy Mingo and junior Kathryn Laird, finished fourth at the Section 3AA Tournament.
In soccer, the Lady Blazers had an exceptional season with an overall 16-2-1 record, finishing third in the conference. Vis soccer made it through section quarter finals beating Bloomington Kennedy (2-0) and semi-finals beating South Saint Paul (2-1). The soccer season ended on October 18 with a 2-1 loss to longtime rival Academy of Holy Angels at the Section 3A Championship game.
Vis cross country also had a strong season. The team won conference with junior Sadie Grunau placing first with a career best time, senior Nina Reamer placing second with a career best time, sophomore Margaret Dalseth placing third, and junior Lauren Kern placing fourth. At sections, the team came in sixth place, with Nina Reamer placing fourth and Sadie Grunau placing thirteenth to advance individually to the state meet at St. Olaf College. Sadie Grunau raced at the State meet on November 3 and placed 140th.
Vis swim had one of its most successful seasons ever. This year, fourteen athletes advanced to the Minnesota State tournament from sections. For the sixth consecutive year and tenth overall, Vis Swim won the Class 1A state title. Though no one placed first, Vis swimmers held steady earning points for the team with multiple athletes coming in second. The team collected a total of 319.5 points to beat Hutchinson who placed second with 272 points. Eighth grader Lucy Berg broke the 100-fly team record previously held by Lorelai Gaertner, class of 2017. For diving, senior Bella Mascia finished eighth in the one-meter diving event.
Overall, the fall sports season was full of remarkable performances both individually and as teams. Vis student athletes are truly talented, young women who are the epitome of “doing it all.” With fall coming to a close, Vis athletes can look forward to the winter and spring seasons to come.
