“You’ve just ruined our whole mission!” My dad shouts. “What were you thinking?”
“I didn’t ruin your mission.” I say calmly. Now that the initial shock of the alarm has worn off, I’m certain that there was no one in the garage.
“What do you mean, you didn’t ruin our mission?” Violet explodes. “You scared them off!”
“No one was there. I didn’t hear anyone inside the building. Didn’t you notice that too?”
My parents exchange glances.
“Lilac,” my mom asks carefully, “when the alarm went off, how loud was it?”
“Like it was splitting my head in half.”
Violet stares in shock. “I think you’ve just developed a new power.”
“What?” I ask. “How could that happen? Don’t superheroes normally get new powers until they turn one?”
“That’s what normally happens, and their powers then continue to grow and develop.” Violet says. “There is a chance that someone will develop a second power, but it’s very rare, and getting one this late is almost unheard of, even if they’ve never had a power before.”
“Wow!” I pause as something occurs to me. “I just have one more question.”
“Yes?” My mom raises one eyebrow.
“If the supervillains aren’t here, then where are they?”

“I’m telling you, she’s in her room!” Flash cries.
The kid holding the knife presses it into his throat. “I’m not going to ask you again. Where is your shape-shifting sister?”
“She’s on a mission!” I blurt out, jumping into the living room. “It was supposed to be me, but I asked her to go instead!”
“That would explain why the alarm went off.” A girl with a yellow bracelet smirks. “I guess your sister tried to change shape to look like one of us.”
